Smell Boxes – VittenFabrikken (2)

The University of Stavanger asked Lotte to help develop a design that would involve children's sense of smell in exploring the story 'The Three Little Pigs'.

Lotte started a preliminary study on the possible roles that smells can play in a storyline and the possible information that smells can add to a story. In order to prevent cognitive overstimulation, it was important to be consistent in the information that each smell gave. This gave rise to the idea of working with the smells of the houses of the different characters in the story. For each character, we chose a smell that would bring out an element of their personality.

Smells in storytelling – Lotte Meeuwissen

To allow children to decide for themselves when and for how long they smell a scent and to metaphorically open the door to the house of the character in question, Lotte came up with the design of the smelling boxes. To give a cue of the smell, we decided to work with color-smell associations. The boxes have an easily exchangeable handle and tray in different colors. The intensity of the scents can also be easily refreshed.
